'A triumph of composition & execution and timely as hell, “The Wall Street Recession Time Blues” by Dennis Angel Band is a terrific slice of vocal jazz.' - radioindy.com
Dennis Angel is a Westchester copyright attorney by day and jazz trumpeter/bandleader at night. Last summer, his band released the single, “The Wall Street Recession Time Blues.” The tune aired on various radio stations across the country. Just before Thanksgiving, the 2nd largest non-commercial radio station in the country, WXPN/Philadelphia played the song between Rosanne Cash and Lyle Lovett. Even the Boston Herald got in on the act and profiled the band on Labor Day. 'The idea for the song came to me when I finally got enough courage to open my retirement statement this past winter,” says Dennis Angel, who was named one of America’s Best Lawyers in 2006, along with David Boies and Alan Dershowitz.
Most of the band members are New York jazz club regulars: David Shaich on bass, plays regularly at The Cotton Club; Joel Mofsenson on piano, played in Broadway shows such as “I Love My Wife,” “Dreamgirls,” and “Cats”; Mike Campenni on drums, played with Gil Coggins, Ted Curson, and Gordon Edwards; Gottfried Stoger on sax/flute, played with Joe Zawinul and Toots Thielemans; and DeForest Raphael sings in many jazz clubs and festivals around the country.
Last October, the Dennis Angel Band went to California to play at a gala fundraising event for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Dennis and his wife, Linda were co-founders of CBTF in 1988, when their daughter Ilana was suffering from a brain tumor. She died the following year. CBTF has raised over $6.5 million and awarded over $5 million in grants for research to help find the causes of and effective treatments for pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors across the country.
